22:30pmLinuxExpo
Went to the LinuxWorldExpo in the Javits Center here in NY today. That was fun. I had gotten tickets for the IBM events and could not only view the keynote where Linus basically called the Samba team the "turd of the toiletbowl", but also had a very decent lunch and heard an interesting talk about how IBM works togethe with a bunch of universities to push Linux into more school (or so IBM says).
Then I stopped by at the VA Linux booth to talk to the folks there. I had emailed them yesterday asking if, by any chance, they had job openings here in the city, and this one guy had emailed me back. So I talked to those guys at VA, and tashey all seem cool. I hope this works out, I really think that VA would be a cool company to start for.
The Ximian (the hackers formerly known as Helix) stand was cool, they gave out nice shirts and a cute monkey, but the bloke giving the presentation was a little inept. Other than that, lots of walking around, lots of snagging goodies and in general a fun, geek way to spend your day.
Other Stuff
I saw that ask signed up with SpeakEasy. I've been with them for over 14 months now, and I love them. Very cool folks and in general things are working well. You should check out their newsgroup speak.easy, Many of the people working at SE are actually chacking the traffic there hand are responding. But be warned, people get pissy quite easily if you point out that they don't know jackshit about how to post a newsgroup posting. The signal/noise ratio is kinda low, but occasionally you find some real gems in there. Some people there know a lot about networking. Anyway, feel free to check out the FAQ I wrote up (together with another guy): speak.easy FAQ.
Jobhunt
Yupp, looking for a job. I want a job with an Open Source company, ideally (see above, re VA Linux). If anybody knows of any good companies to work for in New York City, please, please let me know. And check out my <cheap plug>resume</cheap plug>.

2:15pmBeen working on this project for school. I'ts in Java, and actually it's fun so far. I'll be doing some serious coding this semester, lots of heavy-load classes with lots of programming. That's cool.
Used kivio to generate a flow-chart - pretty neat. Not shabby at all, for a point'n'click program.
But I think I can do flowcharts using LaTeX, right? At least, I saw a flochart.sty-package out there... now if I only had a HOWTO or Tutorial for using that to create flowcharts...

12:30So many movies out there to watch these days! Well, saw "State and Main" on Friday. Really good, very funny and smart and lots of good lines. If you wanna see a witty (in a good sense, not that old, used up witty-as-in-kinda-boring-and-i-don't-get-the-jokes-witty) movie that has not (yet) been hyped too much, go and watch it.

12:10 - First day of my last semester. So
Debian, hmm? Looks really neat. I really dig this
apt-get thingy. I was confused that vim was
not installed, but maybe I did something wrong in the
package-selecting process. Also the XConfiguration was a
bitch, as usual (well, "usual", as in "before those fancy RH
configurators"), as was soundcard
configuration.
Compiled the the 2.4.0 kernel - found
out that one needs to select the correct processor-type or
else the kernel will not boot. Big D'uh. Other than
that, 2.4.0 looks nice. Looks smaller, but maybe I just did
a better job at choosing what stuff I can have as modules
than usually. ;-)
What else? Well, Debian comes with exim as
the default MTA, so I'll give that a try. Looks good, too.
All in all a very successfull installation and a neat system
with lots of new harddrive space. 20 Gigs more than I used
to have :)
Well, gotta go to the gym now, and then do some last
tweaking on the system. Man, I haven't been to the gym in
ages, it's really time I get my flubby ass back in
shape.
Geek ya later...

12:20Last week I did some shopping: got a Palm IIIxe and a new HD. My little 3.6 Gig drive is really getting full and I ment to get a new one for a long time. So now I got it and therefor the plan for today is:
* install the new harddrive
* wipe the old drive and install Debian
* finally install my zip-drive
I thought while I shut down my computer I might as well try a new OS (been using Mandrake up until now). Chose Debian b/c I heard good things and also b/c it's all Free. Let's see how that goes.
Had this Zip-drive sitting here unused for half a year now (or longer?), might as well install that while I'm fuzzing around here.
And maybe update the kernel and try the 2.4? Guess so...
And tonight I gotta watch The Sopranos - man I love that show. It's so good.
